Friends, here is Chapter 1 of Aramaic on One Foot, for premium subscribers. You’ll find the Introduction to the book (for all paid subscribers) here. Chapter 2 is scheduled to appear on July 21st.

Two Different Aramaic Consonants May Match the Same Hebrew Consonant

Example: Hebrew שׁ may appear in Aramaic as שׁ—or as ת. So …

שָׁלוֹם is שְׁלָם, but …

שָׁלוֹשׁ is תְּלָת. (Yes, the vowels can change also; see Lesson 2.)

Common Consonant Alternations

  • Aramaic ד may sometimes be Hebrew ז.

  • Aramaic ט may sometimes be Hebrew צ.

  • Aramaic ע may also sometimes be Hebrew צ (or rarely ק).

  • Aramaic ת may sometimes be Hebrew שׁ.

  • Aramaic ר may sometimes be Hebrew נ.
